15 Screen-Free Activities Kids Actually Enjoy

anIf I left it up to my kids, they would probably play on their tablets all day, every day. But I truly believe there are some days when kids just need to be OFF their screens and doing something hands-on, creative, or active instead.

The problem? Finding screen-free activities that are actually fun — and don’t require a ton of prep — isn’t always easy.

As a busy homeschool mom of four, I love activities that are:

  • simple
  • low-prep
  • inexpensive
  • and realistic for everyday life

That’s one reason I created these FREE “I’m Bored!” Activity Cards for families. They’re filled with easy activity ideas kids can pull anytime they start saying, “Mommmm… I’m bored.”

👉 You can download the FREE printable activity cards at the end of this post!

Here are 15 screen-free activities any kid would genuinely enjoy doing again and again.

Movement & Energy Burners

Balloon Soccer

Blow up a few balloons, grab some laundry baskets or clothes hampers for goals, and let the games begin! My kids love soccer, so this is a great way to let the kids burn energy indoors without worrying about broken lamps or furniture.

Using lightweight balloons like these are easier for little kids to kick and are safe indoors.

Balloon Volleyball

Apparently my kids are on a permanent balloon kick over here!

For this one, simply keep the balloon from touching the ground. You can even hang a blanket across two chairs to make a “net” and turn it into a full competition.

The best screen-free activities for kids are usually the ones that keep them moving without them even realizing they’re exercising.

Flashlight Tag

This is a HUGE favorite in our house.

Anytime my kids get the chance to turn off the lights and run around with flashlights, they’re instantly excited. Something about adding darkness automatically makes the game feel more adventurous.

If you don’t already have kid-friendly flashlights, these are perfect for little hands.

Freeze Dance

One thing that always makes my kiddos smile from ear to ear is dancing.

We usually turn off the lights, play music, and dance like crazy. Then when the music stops — or I flip the lights back on — everyone has to FREEZE.

Want to make it extra fun? Add glow sticks. Trust me, the kids will think it’s the coolest thing ever.

Creative Activities

Homemade Coloring Books

My girls are super creative, and this activity keeps them occupied for a surprisingly long time.

I simply give them printer paper and pencils, and they create their own coloring book pages. Later, they staple everything together into a real “book.”

Sometimes, as a homeschool twist, they even try to “sell” their coloring books for a dollar

Puppet Shows

The actual puppet show is fun… but honestly, the preparation is even better.

My older girls write scripts, create characters, and turn the whole thing into a full production. The shows are always interesting, unpredictable, and hilarious.

Sometimes they make their own puppets, and other times they use puppets their grandpa bought them years ago.

If you want a simple ready-to-go option, these puppet sets are really cute.

Painting With Household Items

If you’re looking for a creative screen-free activity for kids, this is such an easy one.

Instead of paint brushes, let the kids paint using:

  • sponges
  • forks
  • cotton balls
  • potatoes
  • toy cars

The different textures create really cool artwork, and kids love experimenting with unusual tools.

Blanket Forts

A true classic.

I used to do this when I was younger, and now my kids carry on the tradition. Honestly, they’ve become way more advanced at it than we ever were.

They create:

  • “bedrooms”
  • tunnels
  • secret entrances
  • reading corners

And once the fort is built? They’ll usually stay inside for hours reading, coloring, or pretending.

Kitchen Fun

Sometimes the best screen-free activities happen in the kitchen.

Anything my kids make themselves, they’re automatically more excited to eat. Mini pizzas are fun because you can use almost anything as the base:

  • English muffins
  • bagels
  • tortillas
  • biscuits

Then simply add sauce, cheese, and toppings and let the kids create their own masterpieces.

Silly Day: Breakfast for Lunch

This accidentally became a tradition in our house

One day I was too tired to think of a dinner idea, so I made pancakes instead. Now my kids purposely request “breakfast for lunch” and breakfast for dinner because they think it’s hilarious.

You can even use our kid-friendly cookbook
Kid De Cuisine: Hadasah’s Breakfast Delights
to make easy baked pancakes and simple breakfast recipes. This cookbook adds to the fun because, all of the recipes allow for kids as young as 3 years old to cook independently, using a color coded system, requiring minimal assistance from an adult.

Cookie Decorating

Messy? Yes.
Worth it? Also yes!

Cookie decorating is always a hit because kids can be creative while also getting a sweet treat at the end.

Set out toppings like:

  • sprinkles
  • icing
  • powdered sugar
  • chocolate chips

…and let them go wild.

Learning Through Play

Pretend Grocery Store or Restaurant

I honestly didn’t think my kids would get this into this activity, but they LOVE it.

They transform the playroom using:

  • chairs
  • blankets
  • side tables
  • toy food

Sometimes they create a grocery store, and other times it becomes a restaurant.

To make it even more educational, you can use real coins or pretend money to help practice counting and money skills.

And if I tell them they can “keep their tips”? Suddenly everyone becomes very motivated employees

Story Swap

My kids don’t always love reading… but I noticed they enjoy it more when we completely switch roles.

Instead of them simply reading aloud try turning it into a full pretend-play experience.

Try things like:

  • cuddle up with blankets
  • wear pajamas
  • use pretend glasses
  • and let them “be the parent”

Turning reading into play makes it feel less like schoolwork and more like quality time.

Sock Toss

This one is perfect when:

  • the laundry needs to get done
  • the kids are restless
  • and you’re trying to multitask

First, have the kids find matching sock pairs. Then roll the socks into balls and toss them into laundry baskets from across the room.

Simple? Yes.
But kids can get VERY competitive with this one

Scavenger Hunt

I love this activity because you can make it as easy or challenging as you want depending on your child’s age.

Create a list of items around the house and let your kiddos search for them one by one.

You can even create themed scavenger hunts:

  • colors
  • shapes
  • letters
  • animals
  • textures

This one can easily keep kids busy much longer than you’d expect.

Final Thoughts

Screen-free activities don’t have to be expensive, complicated, or Pinterest-perfect.

Sometimes all it takes is a little creativity, a few household items, and a willingness to have fun together.

And honestly? Those simple moments usually end up becoming the memories our kids remember most.
