“Is It Cake?” Themed Birthday!

How to Throw an “Is It Cake?” Themed Birthday Party (DIY Ideas, Games & Real-Life Mom Moments)

So this year we decided to do something different for my daughter’s 8-year-old birthday.

She is the artsy type. According to her, she is already a famous artist (because some of her art was featured at the local library haha). So naturally she wanted a birthday that fit right along with her artsy nature.

But we didn’t go the traditional route.

You see, my girls have been absolutely OBSESSED with the Netflix show Is It Cake?, and one day they asked, “Can we do that puuuuleease Mom?”

And just like that , the birthday theme was born.

Since her birthday was coming up, I said, why not invite your friends and turn it into a full competition?

Now, this was kind of last minute. We only had about a 3-hour block for the party, so we had to get creative and use our time wisely while still making it unforgettable.

How We Structured the Party (Without Losing Our Minds)

Instead of having everyone fully bake from scratch at our house, we sent parents simple recipe ideas ahead of time (cookie cakes, candy bacon and eggs, mini pizza cakes, etc.) and suggested they do the heavy baking at home.

When the girls arrived, they were mostly assembling and doing small baking touches.

This saved SO much time.

It left plenty of room for:

  • Assembling their creations

  • The big reveal

  • Pizza, ice cream, and cake tasting

  • And of course… dramatic judging

The kids still had a ball.

Decorations & Setup (Thank You, Amazon)

Like most moms, I had grand plans to DIY everything and make adorable custom party favors.

However… since this was spur of the moment, my creativity did not get the time to shine like I would have preferred.

Enter Amazon.

I found a 59-piece baking theme decoration set that completely transformed our dining room into a baking paradise. Since we were only decorating one space, it was more than enough.

What surprised the guests most?

Every child had a chef hat and apron waiting at their station. They felt like real contestants. I don’t care how old you are, putting on a chef hat just does something to you.

Each workstation had:

The kids also got to take their aprons and hats home, which made it feel extra special.

Two children getting ready for the Is It Cake Party

The “Is It Cake?” Competition

The original plan was for parents to bring a real version of whatever their child was creating so we could compare it side-by-side with the cake version and truly try to “fool the judges.”

I even made scoring sheets on Canva so we could tally points and crown an official winner.

But because of time constraints (and, you know, busy mom life), some parents forgot to bring the real item.

So we pivoted.

Instead of comparing real vs. cake, we went full dramatic reveal mode. Parents acted as judges, everyone “pretended” not to know if it was cake, and we cut into each creation one by one.

The kids were SHOCKED every single time.

The acting was Oscar-worthy.

Ultimately, everyone was declared a winner, but we officially awarded the winning cake to the birthday girl.

The Almost Disaster (Because There’s Always One)

A few weeks before the party, I borrowed the pretzel sticks I bought for the party (they were supposed to be “fries” for my 5-year-old’s nugget and fries cake idea).

I told myself I would replace them before the party.

I did not.

So 5 minutes before she was supposed to create her masterpiece, I tried to roll cookie dough into fries.

They baked flat.

I handed them to my 5-year-old and she stared at them and said, “Whose is that?”

“They’re your fries.”

She gave the most dramatic frown and said, “Those aren’t my fries.”

I immediately thought we were heading toward meltdown territory.

But with a quick pivot, we renamed them “potato wedges.” She painted them yellow with icing and somehow pulled it off.

Crisis averted.

Cake & Food (Why We Skipped a Traditional Birthday Cake)

One of my favorite parts?

I didn’t even buy a birthday cake.

After the competition, we had pizza and sang happy birthday. But instead of one big cake, the girls shared their creations.

It sparked so much conversation and excitement.

They were nervous and excited watching their friends taste their masterpieces. It honestly felt more meaningful than one traditional cake.

Why have one cake when you can sample five?

I actually prefer it this way.

Budget-Friendly Bonus

This party was surprisingly affordable.

  • Decorations were inexpensive

  • Everyone brought their own ingredients (which helped with allergies and dietary needs)

  • I didn’t have to buy a separate birthday cake

  • We just bought pizza and snacks

Simple. Fun. Memorable.

If We Had More Time, I Would Have Added These Baking-Themed Games

If you’re not on a tight schedule like we were, these would be SO fun to add:

1. Cake or Fake? Speed Round

How to Play:
Set up a table with 10 random objects. Some are real everyday items. Some are cakes disguised as those items. Kids walk around with a clipboard and mark “Cake” or “Real” for each item. After everyone guesses, reveal them one by one.

Supplies Needed:

  • 5 real objects (shoe, book, fruit, etc.)

  • 5 cake versions of similar objects

  • Clipboards or printed guess sheets

  • Pens or pencils

This adds suspense and gets everyone involved at once.

2. Blindfold Frosting Challenge

How to Play:
Pair kids into teams. One child is blindfolded and must frost a cupcake while their partner gives only verbal instructions. No touching!

Set a timer for 2–3 minutes. After time is up, reveal the cupcakes and let everyone vote on:

  • Most Creative

  • Funniest

  • Most Artistic

Supplies Needed:

  • Plain cupcakes

  • Frosting in piping bags

  • Sprinkles

  • Blindfolds

  • Napkins

It’s messy. It’s hilarious. It’s unforgettable.

3. Mystery Ingredient Mini-Challenge

How to Play:
Give each child a cupcake or mini cake base. Then place 5–6 topping options on a table (sprinkles, crushed cookies, fruit, chocolate chips, cereal, etc.).

Each child draws one “mystery ingredient” from a bowl and must incorporate it into their design.

This tests creativity and quick thinking — very on theme.

Supplies Needed:

  • Cupcake bases

  • Assorted toppings

  • Small bowl with ingredient names written on paper

What the Kids Really Learned

Beyond the fun, I loved watching:

  • Teamwork

  • Patience

  • Presentation skills

  • Creativity

  • Critical thinking

Even though it was technically a competition, they helped each other constantly. Borrowing food coloring. Sharing toppings. Offering encouragement.

It was beautiful.

If You’re Not Short on Time, Try These Party Variations

If I had more time, I would have added:

1. Side-by-Side Real vs. Cake Display

Have the real item displayed directly next to the cake version to truly try to fool the judges. That visual comparison would elevate the suspense.

2. Live Judges Panel

Set up a formal judges table with score paddles (1–10). Let judges ask contestants questions about their “design inspiration” before revealing the cake.

3. Timed Decorating Round

Add a 10-minute timed decorating challenge where everyone must transform a plain cake into something specific (like “back-to-school item” or “favorite food”).

These would really take the party to the next level.

Final Thoughts

All in all, this was a party to remember.

My daughter was smiling from ear to ear long after everyone left. Her friends had a blast. And honestly? I had just as much fun watching it unfold. In addition to the chef hat and aprons, we even found these baking themed party favors on Amazon for more take home fun!

If you’re looking for a unique birthday theme that encourages creativity, teamwork, and just the right amount of crazy, I highly recommend giving an “Is It Cake?” party a try.

And if you’re anything like me, don’t worry, even the potato wedges can turn out just fine in the end.
